Founded by a diverse group of community leaders in 1950, the faith-based hospital has become southwestern Georgia’s leading health care organization and the only area hospital offering open heart surgery.
2010 patient safety and clinical quality achievements were:
- Earning Blue Cross Blue Shield and Aetna Center of Distinction as a Center of Excellence for Total Joint Replacement and Spine Surgery

- Decreasing readmissions and mortality related to congestive heart failure.

- Becoming the first Georgia hospital to achieve Joint Commission Accreditation for Acute Coronary Syndrome

- Earning recognition from the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) for the safety and quality of the hospital’s endoscopy services; the unit is one of only 215 nationally to receive this seal of approval, receiving recognition for adhering to ASGE’s quality guidelines and the Centers for Disease Control’s infection control guidelines.

- Receiving three-year accreditation for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) services and nuclear medicine from the American College of Radiology (ACR) in December; St. Francis is the only hospital in Columbus to have achieved ACR accreditation for MRI services.

- Achieving 416 straight days without a case of ventilator-associated pneumonia as of August

- Falling below the national average of .8 percent for surgical site infection rate; St. Francis’ rate is .53 percent.

- Reducing patient falls to best practice levels by increasing the frequency of rounding

- Achieving a 74 percent reduction in central-line associated bloodstream infections since October 2009

- Adding a state-of-the-art hyperbaric chamber—the BARA-MED XD Monoplace—at the St. Francis Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center.

Two Statewide Awards
St. Francis earned two statewide awards from the Georgia Hospital Association/Partnership for Health and Accountability (GHA/PHA). First, the hospital received a third place award in the Greater Than 300 Beds category for “Implementing a Blood Management Safety Program.”
St. Francis also became the only hospital in Georgia to receive a fourth consecutive PHA Circle of Excellence award. St. Francis won the award for winning a PHA patient safety award in 2010 and for earning four or more PHA patient safety awards within the last five years.
Accreditations
- St. Francis Hospital is Columbus’ first and only Chest Pain Center accredited by the Society of Chest Pain Centers.
- St. Francis Hospital is Columbus’ first and only Primary Stroke Center accredited by The Joint Commission.
- St. Francis Hospital and The Bradley Center (a mental health facility operated by St. Francis) are accredited by The Joint Commission.
- St. Francis’ Cardiac Rehabilitation program is accredited by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
Awards
- Three consecutive Consumer Hospital of Choice Awards (2005/2006, 2006/2007 and 2007/2008) for Best Doctors, Best Nurses, Best Quality and Best Reputation, according to independent research conducted by National Research Corporation.
- Josh Nahum First Place Award for Achievement in Infection Prevention and Control (2007) from the Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) for achieving a zero percent deep sternal wound infection rate.
- Georgia Hospital Association's Circle of Excellence Award (2007 & 2008), recognizing hospitals that have consistently shown leadership in quality and patient safety.
- Quality and Patient Safety Award (2008) from the Partnership for Health and Accountability.
- Compass Award (2008) for overall service excellence and physician satisfaction.
