Diabetes Education at Health Matters of St. Francis
Our Diabetes Education Program is nationally recognized by the American Diabetes Association. Our staff is specially trained in diabetes and includes registered nurses, dietitians and resource educators. Whether you have just found out you have diabetes or have had it for years, our Diabetes Education Program is designed to help you learn more about the disease and how you can manage diabetes well.
The following services are available:
Diabetes Education
Offered for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and structured for both those who have had diabetes for sometime and for those who are newly diagnosed. Learn about nutrition, exercise, blood glucose monitoring, medications, avoiding health complications, living a full and healthy life and more. Family and friends are welcome to attend sessions.
Pre-Diabetes Education
Before people develop Type 2 diabetes, they almost always have "pre-diabetes." Learn the actions you can take to delay or prevent Type 2 diabetes.
Intensive Insulin Management Class
This series of classes are for individuals who use any type(s) of insulin as a primary medication in their diabetes management. The content goes beyond the basics to create individualized diabetes tools specific to optimize diabetes control with insulin. Insulin to carbohydrate rations, hidden carbohydrate identification, insulin correction/sensitivity data and other topics will be detailed by our certified diabetes educators.
Insulin Pump Training
Designed for individuals moving to an insulin pump for their diabetes management, this class includes hands on instruction on pump technology. Participants will have improved understanding and comfort with wearing and using their pumps by the time they leave.
Gestational Diabetes Class
A special class for expectant mothers diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Participants will leave with a personalized meal plan and a blood glucose management plan. Classes are often held once or twice weekly at Health Matters of St. Francis.
