New Diabetes Educator Knows Diabetes Management First Hand
Tuesday, May 09, 2006
Erin Rayfield first learned about diabetes at age 12. That’s when she was diagnosed with the disease. Now at age 26, she’s using her first hand experience to help others—including children—manage the disease, including their eating habits.
“Having diabetes helps me to relate to other people who have diabetes,” Rayfield says. “I can especially empathize with children since I was young when I was diagnosed. I know how difficult it can be, particularly the peer pressure.”
As a graduate of Auburn University and as a registered and licensed dietician, Rayfield joined the Diabetes Program of St. Francis in April. She will provide comprehensive and individualized diabetes management consultations to patients referred to the diabetes program.
Prior to joining St. Francis, Rayfield completed a dietetic internship at the Medical University of South Carolina and was the Community Outreach Dietician for West Georgia Health System’s community clinic. She is certified in childhood and adolescent weight management and has taught nutrition classes related to diabetes, heart health, obesity, cancer, pediatrics and more for children, adolescents and adults. While at West Georgia Health Systems, she taught healthy meal planning and healthy cooking at a week long camp for children called “Jr. Chefs” and “Kids Camp.”
In 2005, Rayfield received an Achievement Award from the Georgia Diabetes and Prevention program for her work Coleman Community Health Center in LaGrange, Georgia. At the center, she taught nutrition classes and educated people with diabetes about medication, stress and exercises.
Rayfield is a member of the West Georgia obesity task force, the American Dietetic Association, the American Association of Diabetes Educators and vice president of the local American Association of Diabetes Educators. She is currently completing certification as a registered diabetes educator.
St. Francis’ Diabetes Management Program is the only local program recognized by the American Diabetes Association. For more information, call (706) 257-7670.
