Dr. Leland McCluskey Receives Humanitarian Award
Orthopaedic surgeon Leland McCluskey, MD, of the St. Francis Orthopaedic Institute received the Dr. Jack Hughston Humanitarian Award from Columbus, Ga., Mayor Jim Wetherington May 20. The award was presented during the 35th annual Mayor’s Awards Ceremony at the Columbus Government Center.
Dr. McCluskey received the award for his relief efforts in Haiti following the January 12 earthquake. He has traveled to Haiti twice since the earthquake, serving for three weeks under Samaritan’s Purse at the Haiti Baptist Mission Hospital, 15 miles east of Port-au-Prince.
"Your dedication and compassion touches lives daily, not only in our community, but wherever suffering is great, help is needed and hope begs to be restored. Your commitment to service and leadership through the gentle art of healing is an inspiration to our community," said Mayor Wetherington.
Dr. McCluskey is only the fourth individual to receive the award, the Mayor’s highest honor.
St. Francis Hospital donated and shipped $100,000 worth of sorely needed medical supplies, surgical instruments and medication to Haiti in support of Dr. McCluskey’s and other Samaritan’s Purse team members’ humanitarian efforts.
